Default Swearing and GW

Ok so I got a bit hot under the collor because my poor old dervish was getting pwned. Fair enough, I probably shouldn't of sworn about my inability to play the character in general chat, but a 71 hour suspension for swearing which is censored anyway? I'm having alot of trouble trying to work out how some one can find ---- so offensive to report it? Its not even a word you can see! Alternatively, are there people who monitor the chat channels and suspend players for unruley behaviour? Because seriously, I've seen alot worse than swearing on the chat channels and those players seemed to have no trouble continuing with their behaviour. Ah well, lessoned learned, turn off chat screen when my builds are going pear shaped...

I don't understand why ANet suspends for swearing when there are sometimes people cybering IN local chat... or the occasional racial/sexual preference-fight-fest.

Actually if you goto into the options you can change the word filter to OFF.
I only swear amongst my guildies but never in pub chat.

How hard is it to NOT swearing, anyway?

Just because there's a filter doesn't mean you can swear and bad mouth and use foul language whenever you want. Ok?

Judging from your behavior here, I'd say you deserve it in every imaginable way.

Deal with it.

"How hard is it to NOT swearing, anyway?"

Considering its one of the most harmless things you can do, very hard. Ok. So there's alot of puritans who play GW. Thanks for the heads up Cacheelma. So swearing is bad, being racist, sexist etc dosen't matter.

Learn to control yourself. If that's hard, then SUCK IT UP.

Who told you that? Oh let me guess, the one who told you you can swear freely because there's a filter?

Go try being racist after you get unbanned. See if your next ban is still as "impermanent".

"Go try being racist after you get unbanned"

No, thats my point. I'm neither racist or sexist, but occassionly when things go pear shaped for me and I swear. It happens, its also filtered for puritans who cannot handle reality. Yet, they still seemed to be offended by a censored word. Like I oringially ask, how can ---- be offensive enough for a 71 hour suspension? It totally undermines and contradicts the logic of placing a option on the swear filter in the first place.

It's the internet. Deal with swearing. Being banned for swearing in a game with an optional chat filter is just rubbish..Learn to play anet?

A filter is nice. It's too back that most people who swear actually do it in such a manner as to bypass the filter.

I can't count the amount of times there are spaces in the first and second letter of a swear just to force it upon those that don't want to hear it.

I personally wouldn't report someone for a single swear or even a couple. A stream? You bet. Especially if it's accompanied by other violations which is often the case.

To the OP: You got suspended for a violation of the TOS, even if it is relatively minor, it was an infraction. Suck it up, do the time, and perhaps learn to curb your language in the future when dealing with public chat.

I can't help but think there's more to this story than just a tiny little ----. It does seem to take a good bit, at least a reasonable offense, to get banned in GW. What exactly did you type..?

Most of the time when someone gets banned for "swearing" they actually get banned for "swearing at someone", which is abuse. It doesn't matter if there is a chat filter, it's still abuse if you're setting out to deliberately insult someone.

Now, I may be jumping to conclusions here, but judging by the fact that two words were enough to coax the OP into calling someone a "prude", I'd say it wouldn't take much for it to become more abusive (I don't view "prude" as offensive or abusive, but someone might). If I'm wrong, and you really did nothing more harmful than uttering a simple curse word at no one in particular, than I apologise.

The problem here is that, even if you didn't mean it to be aimed at anyone in particular, someone might have misconstrued your intentions and taken offense. For instance, had you said "----ing dervishes suck", I can see someone reporting that, because it is more or less a personal attack at anyone who chooses to play that profession (even if you didn't mean it that way).

As someone else mentioned, a lot of people try to work their way around the chat filter, which is an understandably bannable offense. Maybe you didn't deliberately do it, but a simple typo could have made your word pass by the filter, and someone reported you thinking you did it deliberately.

However, it all comes down to one thing. It's Anet's decision. I can understand why they wanna keep their game clean, even if there is a chat filter already. I have no problem with swearing, but in an MMO where there are millions of players, all from different cultures, you have to have certain rules set in place to prevent huge incidents occuring. I'd say just take a break from the game for three days, and live with it. Flaming Anet isn't going to do anything (and it always happens in these threads, even if it wasn't the original intention of the OP), and it really just makes you look petty and weakens your case.

I do a lot of those things that are against the ToS. Oh well. Oh and OP those puritans you're talking about uncheck the filter just so they can report you.

Nothing you can do about it though, bitching here won't help anything. Just get you flamed that's about it, cause Trollru erm.. I mean Guru is like that.

I agree, I reckon the OP swore his heart out. Anyway, Unlucky Slayer was kind enough to point you into the right direction. You have a sad attitude. That's why you got the ban, and there's nothing this community can do to help you. Sorry if that's not what you want to hear, but please dont cry about it.

ANet gave you 72 hours to learn self-control.
You might also have some time to read the terms of service to avoid this in the future.

This isn't the case at all. The filter is there to prevent "Mistakes" it's not a license to swear. In fact, they specifically tell you not to do it in the TOS.

This is a common cop-out. "There's a filter! You should use it if you are offended by foul language."

That's not the point. Some people aren't offended by the occasional swear, but a constant stream as seen from many different types of people are too much. Those people don't want to see your stream of profanity and have the filter off so they can see everything said in their guild chat and whatnot.

The existence of a filter does not mean you should feel free to swear like a sailor, and the mere existence of temp bans being given out by Anet by such an occurrence allegedly is evidence of that same thought process.
